Sunshine Coast Wedding Photographer for Camera Shy Couples | Natural and Candid Wedding Photos

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Almost every couple who enquires with me starts by saying some version of:

"We're really awkward in photos."

And every single time, I smile because they're usually the couples who end up with the most beautiful, genuine images.

Most people aren't used to having a camera pointed at them. They're not models, they don't spend their days practising poses, and they certainly don't want their wedding to feel like a photoshoot.

They simply want to have an amazing day with their favourite people and know it's all being captured beautifully.

That's where I can help.

Images by Lou O'Brien wedding photographer profile

Hi! I’m Lou, a Sunshine Coast wedding photographer with over 20 years experience capturing real people, real connection, and real wedding stories.

My background in press photography taught me how to observe moments as they unfold, but also how to gently step in when needed to guide and shape a moment without ever making it feel forced.

So my approach is simple:

A mix of real candid moments, and gently guided portraits that still feel natural, relaxed, and like you.

A Sunshine Coast Wedding Photographer Who Blends Candid Storytelling With Natural Guidance

bridal prep photo ideas

My style sits in the space between documentary and gently directed photography.

I don’t just stand back and disappear, and I don’t over-direct every moment either.

Instead, I read the energy of the day and work with you naturally.

As a former press photographer, I learned that every image tells a story.

Sometimes that story is completely candid, a fleeting laugh, a tear, a hug that no one expected.

And sometimes, I gently guide you into a moment so the story is told more clearly, more beautifully, and in a way that still feels like you.

I’ll never ask you to do something that feels uncomfortable.

Instead, I gently guide you with:

  • simple movement prompts

  • light direction for connection

  • small adjustments that feel natural

  • encouragement that keeps things relaxed and easy

Because most couples aren’t sure what to do in front of a camera, and that’s my job, not yours.

Some couples are playful and relaxed. Others are quiet and reserved. Both are completely perfect. I adapt to you, not the other way around.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose (That’s What I’m Here For)

One of the biggest things I hear is:

"We have no idea what we're supposed to do."

And I want you to know, I completely understand. Almost every couple I work with says the same thing at the start.

You don’t need to know how to pose, or what to do with your hands, or how to “act natural” on command. That’s where I step in.

I’ll guide you through everything in a way that feels:

  • easy

  • natural

  • relaxed

  • and actually enjoyable

The goal is never perfection. It’s connection.

And the best photos always come from real moments:

  • laughter you didn’t plan

  • tears you didn’t expect

  • quiet in-between glances

  • family hugs that last a little longer than usual

  • those small, honest moments that tell your story

My Own Wedding Story (And Why I Photograph Weddings Differently)

I completely understand how overwhelming wedding planning can feel.

When I got married, we planned everything in just seven weeks. It was simple, personal, and very much focused on what felt right for us.

I said “I do” on the headland across from my childhood home here on the Sunshine Coast, wearing a red dress that felt completely like me. After the ceremony, we celebrated with a relaxed backyard reception surrounded by our favourite people.

It wasn’t about perfection or performance. It was about connection, love, and being present. And when I look back at those photos now, they mean everything to me.

They don’t just show the day, they take me straight back into how it felt.

That’s exactly what I want for you. A wedding day that feels real, not staged.

A day where you can relax, be yourselves, and trust that everything meaningful is being captured naturally and beautifully.

Why Every Wedding Collection Includes an Album

Sunshine Coast wedding albums

This is something that's really close to my heart.

Every wedding collection I offer includes a professionally designed wedding album because I believe your wedding photos deserve so much more than sitting on a hard drive or getting lost amongst thousands of images on your phone.

Your wedding day goes by incredibly quickly. One minute you're getting ready, the next you're cutting the cake and wondering where the day went.

That's why I love albums.

They give you a chance to slow down, sit together on the couch years later, turn the pages, and relive the moments that mattered most.

In many ways, I think wedding albums are a little like engagement rings.

You're engaged before the ring goes on your finger, but there's something special about having something tangible that reminds you of that moment and the commitment you've made.

Your wedding album does the same thing.

It's not just a collection of photographs. It's your story. Your memories. Your favourite people. The beginning of your family's history.

It's something you can share with friends, show your future children, and pull off the shelf every anniversary.

That's why every wedding collection includes an album, because I want your memories to be enjoyed, not forgotten on a screen.

And if you're planning an elopement, don't worry, albums can also be added to any of my elopement collections so your story can be preserved in exactly the same beautiful way.

customised wedding album books

Your wedding album becomes:

  • your first family heirloom

  • a way to relive your story

  • something you can share with loved ones

  • a physical reminder of how your day felt

These memories only grow more meaningful with time.

A Full Wedding Story, Not Just a Handful of Highlights

documentary wedding photography

One of the things I love most about wedding photography is telling the complete story of your day.

Not just the big moments everyone expects, but all the little moments in between that often end up meaning the most.

Your wedding gallery isn't simply a collection of pretty photos. It's the story of your day from beginning to end.

  • The nervous excitement before the ceremony.

  • The hugs from family.

  • The laughter with your friends.

  • The happy tears.

  • The quiet moments when it's just the two of you.

  • The details you've spent months planning.

  • The atmosphere, energy and emotion that made your wedding uniquely yours.

Some of these moments happen naturally and completely unplanned. Others are gently guided by me so you feel comfortable, relaxed and look your absolute best without ever feeling stiff or awkward.

Because your wedding isn't just something that happens. It's something you experience.

And I want your gallery to bring you straight back to how it felt.

One thing I encourage all couples to do is look through full wedding galleries, not just Instagram highlights or a photographer's favourite images.

That's why I'm always happy to share a selection of complete galleries from real weddings. It gives you a genuine sense of my style, how I tell a wedding story from start to finish, and the consistency of my work across an entire wedding day.

After all, anyone can show a handful of beautiful photographs.

What really matters is knowing your photographer can consistently capture hundreds of meaningful moments throughout your day, no matter the location, weather or timeline.

That's the kind of confidence and peace of mind I want every couple to have when they book me.

Local Sunshine Coast Wedding Photographer (And Your Built-In Local Guide)

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings on the Sunshine Coast is that this place isn't just where I work, it's home.

I grew up here and have spent most of my life exploring every corner of the region, from the beaches in the south to the coastal villages and hinterland towns in the north.

But my local knowledge goes beyond simply living here.

Before I became a wedding photographer, I worked as a press photographer for the local newspaper. That role took me all over the Sunshine Coast, photographing people, events, businesses and stories every day. In many ways, I probably saw more of the Sunshine Coast than most locals do.

It gave me a deep understanding of the region, the hidden gems, the best locations, how the light works in different areas, and all the little local insights that can make a wedding day run more smoothly.

I'm always happy to share local knowledge and recommendations.

Many of my couples are planning their wedding from Brisbane, interstate or overseas, so having someone local in their corner can make a huge difference.

Whether you're looking for photo locations, timeline advice, accommodation suggestions, hidden spots for guests to explore, or ideas for turning your wedding into a long weekend getaway, I'm always happy to help.

When you book me, you're not just booking a photographer.

You're also getting someone who knows the Sunshine Coast inside and out and genuinely loves helping couples experience the very best of it.

From photography timelines and beautiful portrait locations to weather backup plans and local recommendations, I'm here to help make the whole experience feel easy, relaxed and enjoyable.

So you can focus on celebrating with your favourite people while I take care of documenting the memories.
